Flower Care Instructions
Thank you for choosing Emory Village Flowers! Follow these simple tips to keep your fresh flowers looking beautiful as long as possible.
When You First Receive Your Flowers
- Trim the stems — Cut about 1 inch off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption.
- Remove leaves below the waterline — Any leaves submerged in water will rot and promote bacterial growth.
- Place in fresh water immediately — Use a clean vase filled with cool, fresh water.
- Use the flower food packet — If included with your arrangement, add it to the water to help your flowers last longer.
Ongoing Care
- Change the water every 2 days — Fresh water prevents bacteria from building up and shortening the life of your blooms.
- Re-trim stems — Each time you change the water, trim a small amount off the stems.
- Keep flowers cool — Display your arrangement away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and appliances that generate heat.
- Avoid drafts and fruit — Keep flowers away from drafty windows and ripening fruit, which releases ethylene gas that speeds up wilting.
Care Tips by Flower Type
Roses
Roses love cool temperatures. Remove any guard petals (the outer petals that may look slightly damaged) — they protect the inner petals during transport. Re-cut stems and change water every 2 days.
Lilies
Remove the pollen-covered stamens as soon as the flowers open to prevent staining and extend bloom life. Keep away from pets, as lilies can be toxic to cats.
Sunflowers
Sunflowers are thirsty! Check the water level daily and top up as needed. They do best in a sunny spot but away from direct heat.
Potted Plants
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Most indoor plants prefer indirect light. Avoid overwatering — it's the most common cause of plant decline.
